What is 6G? What Will Change in Our Lives?

Technology is growing at an exponential rate and as the world continues to rely heavily on technology for communication and connectivity, the arrival of 6G, a faster and more reliable network, is eagerly awaited. 5G networks have become widespread globally, but even that is no longer enough. With faster speeds, higher capacity and lower latency, 6G can exponentially improve the way we communicate and interact with each other. In this post, we will examine together what is the difference of 6G compared to the current 5G network, which has managed to become the mainstream, and what problems it solves.

What is 6G?

6G is simply the name given to the sixth generation mobile networks. It has not yet reached official standards or specifications, it is still in the early stages of development. The technology and capabilities discussed for 6G, which is expected to be available worldwide in the next 5 to 10 years, are quite exciting.

Speed, Capacity, and Latency

One of the key differences between 6G and previous connectivity technologies is the speed of data transmission. While 5G networks can achieve really high speeds of 20 gigabits per second (Gbps), 6G is expected to transmit data at up to 1 terabit per second (Tbps). That's 50 times faster than the fastest 5G networks currently available.

Speed is the tip of the iceberg. Another point where 6G differs from 5G is that it will have significantly more capacity. In this way, 6G allows many more devices to connect to the internet and use the network at the same time without experiencing slowdown or congestion problems. Especially considering that more and more devices are connecting to the internet of things (IoT), both at home and outside, 6G can perfectly meet the needs of continuous communication.

6G will also perform well on latency. Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel from one point to another. On 5G networks, latency can be as low as 1ms, which is already incredibly fast, just like data transmission speed. 6G is expected to further improve this speed, reaching latency as low as 100 microseconds (µs). You can picture it this way: a single blink takes about 300ms, meaning we blink 300 times slower than 5G's latency.

Technology behind 6G

The technology behind 6G is still being developed, there are a few key areas of focus that developers are focusing on to make all this possible. One focus area is the use of terahertz (THz) frequencies. These frequencies are higher than the millimeter wave frequencies currently used for 5G and offer significantly more bandwidth.

Future Possibilities with 6G

One of the most exciting aspects of 6G technology is its potential for use in space communications. As space exploration, which has managed to attract the attention of all of us, increases, the need for faster and more reliable communication systems increases significantly. 6G networks can even be used to provide high-speed internet and communications services to astronauts in space.

With the pandemic, many of us have switched to hybrid or remote working order. During this period, video conferences and various remote seminars became widespread globally. Well, have you ever thought of being examined remotely, being treated remotely, or even remotely operated?

What is 6G?-2

6G technology has the potential to revolutionize healthcare. 6G networks can enable remote surgeries and medical procedures, allowing doctors to perform operations on patients in different parts of the world. This can be particularly useful in remote or underserved areas where access to healthcare is limited. I don't know yet if I would have preferred a surgeon on another continent to perform my surgery.

6G technology has the potential to improve communication forms with new ideas. Some researchers in the industry are investigating and discussing the use of holographic communication, in which images and messages are transmitted as 3D holograms rather than 2D screens. Although the use of biological communication, in which the human body is used as a tool to transmit data, is also being investigated, we are not yet prepared for such a form of communication.

6G is still years away from launch and adoption. But it's clear that the possibilities with this technology are exciting. Unleashing lightning-fast connectivity to the Internet, incredibly low latency and higher capacity, 6G has the potential to transform the way we communicate and interact with each other. Considering the integration of the latest technologies such as terahertz frequencies and AI/ML, the limits we can reach in the future with 6G are very high.
